The government of India has launched many schemes to increase the enrollment of students in government schools like free textbooks, free bags, free uniforms, etc. The Karnataka government has launched a free bicycle scheme. This scheme was launched by the Karnataka former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in 2006-07. Under this scheme, the Karnataka government distributed free bicycles to the students of the hilly area and the rural area.
The main target was the girl students enrolled in class 8th in the government and the government-aided schools of the BPL family. After that, this scheme was extended to all girls and boys of the 8th standard from the year 2007-2008. Later this scheme was extended to the 10th class. This scheme was launched with aim of facilitating the transport of students to rural areas and hilly regions. The main target was the 8th-class students of the government and the government-aided schools. The students that were not eligible are:

Karnataka Free Bicycle Yojana Distribution 2023
In 2017-18 total of 5, 05,896 bicycles have been distributed to all the students. 2, 47,955 girl cycle and 2, 57,941 boys’ cycle was distributed to the students. The expenditure incurred is Rs.172.00 crores. A tool has also been provided with every bicycle for repair. Every bicycle was provided with a five-year warranty card. A service camp has been also organized at the cluster level for the repairing of the bicycle within 6 months of distribution.

For the academic year 2019-20, the government has entrusted that all the material used in the bicycle like handles, rods, and spokes must be BIS certified with 5 year warranty period. For the registration process, you have to wait for a few days. the government will soon release the official website under which you can fill out your application form.
The government considers canceling the Karnataka Free Bicycle Scheme for school children due to the low quality of the bicycle. The cycle becomes scraping within a few months of use. So at present, the government is paying Rs.3, 900 per cycle for girl students and Rs. 3,600 per cycle for boys, with the total expenditure at Rs. 185 crores.
